Over the last ten years or so, the system of all-inclusive holidays has plagued Crete. Once thriving towns and resorts have seen their businesses fade as holiday-makers choose to stay in hotels where everything is pre-paid at home. That is, guests are not charged (further) for anything they consume at the hotel, with a few exceptions like some alcoholic drinks. The result is that many guests do not leave the hotel grounds at all during their stay and so see little of the island.
This kind of holiday is not for everyone, particularly those who are more adventurous and want to experience the culture of the island they have chosen to holiday in. This is where Cretan villa holidays come to the fore.
Location of Villas to Rent in Crete
Villas can be found all over the island to suit all tastes and pockets. Whether you prefer north, south, east or west Crete, there are many accommodations to choose from. Some villas are quite remote and require the use of a car while others are within walking distance from shops, restaurants and beaches. The more remote villas are usually set in the mountains with magnificent views for those who prefer the rustic side of Crete. Beachside villas are also abundant and boast the charm of having the sparkling blue Aegean Sea (on the north) and the deeper blue Libyan Sea (on the south) at their doorstep.
Cretan Villa Prices and Sizes
The prices of the villas vary widely depending on the size, location, amenities and time of the year. Some of the luxury villas cost about $3000 a week. However, these villas can sleep up to ten people in five bedrooms each with their own en-suite as well as a complete range of amenities and maid service.
At the lower end of the scale, a cosy villa for two (to four with a sofa bed) would cost about $700 for a week mid season. In this case, there is no swimming pool or maid service. Of course, there are many villas to choose from that lie between these two examples.
A Classy Crete Holiday
Finding a villa to rent in Crete gives complete autonomy and independence from the crowds, organised activities and set mealtimes. Whether set in the mountain or by the sea, this is an ideal holiday choice for those who prefer to do their own thing. There is much to discover on the island that cannot be found in holiday resorts.
